General Description of Crete
Crete is the largest island in Greece. In total, it has an area of 8,300 km2 and a population of approximately 620,000 people.
In Crete, you can enjoy different sites of historical interest, such as the Egyptian Lighthouse, one of the oldest lighthouses in the world, or the Samaria National Park, a true natural paradise between mountains and waterfalls that will amaze you.
Its landscape is characterized by extensive valleys and beaches with crystal clear waters that have a coastline on the Aegean Sea. While in the northern part you will find the concentration of tourist centers, in the south you will see natural regions and towns of another level.
The capital of Crete is Heraklion, although the island is also known for cities such as Chania, Agios Nikolaos, and Rethimno.
Crete beaches
The island of Crete is full of wonderful beaches that you can choose from and there are for all tastes and needs.
On the one hand, we recommend visiting Balos Beach, located towards the end of the Gramvousa peninsula.
It is one of the most exotic places in Crete. Its crystal clear waters form a shallow lagoon that is surrounded by a beautiful mountainous landscape that contrasts with the turquoise sea. In addition, this beach is known worldwide for its pinkish sand that gives a unique touch to the landscape.
On the other hand, another beach that you cannot miss on your way through Crete is the popular Elafonisi, a coast famous throughout the world for its fantastic pink sand, and a fairly calm sea with seductive shades of blue.
Finally, you cannot miss the sunset at the beautiful Falasarna Beach, located on the west coast of Crete. There you can enjoy a calm atmosphere and practice water sports, for example, windsurfing.
Getting to Crete by Ferry
One of the most popular means of transport chosen by tourists to travel to Crete is the ferry or cruise. It is possible to travel by ferry from the port of Piraeus (Athens) to different cities in Greece, including Crete.
These boats leave during the night and arrive very early (at 6 in the morning) to the main cities of the island, such as Chania and Heraklion, so you will have the opportunity to enjoy a whole day in Crete if you do not plan to stay for more time.
It is also possible to take a ferry to Crete from the Peloponnese and, in the high season, from locations such as Santorini or Mykonos.
Cruises are usually a more picturesque and cheaper alternative to planes, so they are a good opportunity if you want to see the Cretan territory in all its splendor.
