The Highlights of the Peloponnese

The Peloponnese is a peninsula in southern Greece. This is connected to the continent through the Isthmus of Corinth, which is crossed by the Corinth Canal. Its name means "Island of Pelops" and goes back to the myth according to which this Greek mythological hero would have conquered the entire region.

The Peloponnese is made up of five peripheral units: Corinthia, Laconia, Mesenia, Arcadia and Argolis, and administratively they also belong to the Peloponnese Achaia and Elis, although territorially they are part of the periphery of Western Greece.

This peninsula is characterized by having a very mountainous relief, since it is an extension of the Pindus mountain range. That is why it has several massifs with very high peaks, the highest being Taygetus, which is over two thousand four hundred meters high.

In the Peloponnese is the most important religious center of antiquity - Olympia. The Olympic Games were held there for the first time. At present Olympia is a very interesting archaeological site where you can learn about the culture of the ancient Greeks.

Also, you can find there the fabulous city of Sparta, one of the most important polis of ancient Greece.

Visit the Peloponnese

The best season to visit the Peloponnese is from March to December, so we recommend that you take these months into account if you want to enjoy the ideal climate. If you do not have these dates available, do not worry, because you will be able to visit the peninsula the rest of the year.

What to Eat and Drink in the Peloponnese

The gastronomic offer of the Peloponnese will allow you to get to know the typical dishes of Greek cuisine; it is a great destination if you love to discover places based on their flavors,

A dish that we recommend you try if you visit this peninsula is Gyros, a recipe in which lamb or pork is marinated for 12 hours with lemon juice, spices and vegetables and then roasted over low heat to later place it in a Pita bread along with a salad.

Likewise, we invite you to try Fasolada, a soup made from beans and vegetables with olive oil and sea salt.

And for dessert, don't miss the amazing Greek yogurt, and if possible accompany it with honey and fruit, a masterpiece that cannot be anything other than a gift from the gods.

As for the typical drinks, the Peloponnese is characterized by having several vineyard areas where exquisite wines are produced, so we suggest you bet on the local, you will not regret it.

What to See and Do in the Peloponnese

The Peloponnese is an incredible destination for the most curious travelers, because there you will find the most incredible archaeological sites located in the most wonderful landscapes.
