General Information about Venice
Venice is one of the most famous cities in northeastern Italy due to its distinguished geography. It is a group of more than 100 small islands located in a lagoon of the Adriatic Sea, on which houses and glorious historical buildings have been built.
Instead of avenues, the city of Venice is crossed by canals. Some of these canals can be crossed by picturesque bridges and others require a gondola ride.
The most important canal in Venice is "The Grand Canal", which runs through the city forming an "S". It is four kilometers long and owes its great flow to the small city canals that flow into it. Vaporettos circulate on this canal, boats that fulfill the function of buses on the water.
Venice: a Unique City
The unique beauty of Venice has aroused the interest of artists and great personalities throughout history. It is even said that during the splendor years of Versailles, home of the French King Louis XIV, obsessed with opulence and refinement, he developed a silent competition with this beautiful city motivated by jealousy. This is how he built a canal in the palace gardens and at the culmination of the festivities of 1647, the king, queen and the entire court embarked on gondolas sent as a gift by the Doge of Venice, the maximum leader at that time.
How Is the Culture in Venice
Traditional Venice Food and Drink
The typical cuisine of Venice is characterized by its simplicity and by using as raw material those products that the lagoon offers, which are usually combined with different types of rice and spices from the oriental influence in their preparations. Although, of course, you can also find typical Italian dishes such as pizza and pasta.
Some of the most typical dishes of the area are: Cozze sáltate, mussels made in the pan with oil, garlic, parsley and pepper, which are usually ordered as a starter; Bigoli in salsa, a pasta that is prepared with onion, sardines, oil, pepper and salt, or if you just want to try a little of everything, you can order the cicchetti in any bar, which consist of a Venetian-style tapas. You can accompany all this with wine or a cocktail of your choice.
Venice’s Carnival
The Venice Carnival is the most important event celebrated in the city. It takes place in mid-February and is one of the most curious traditions of this paradise.
On this festivity, people wear typical 17th century Venice clothing and use masks to hide their identity. If you plan to visit Venice on this date, this carnival is a must.
The History behind Venice’s Carnival
The tradition of wearing masks in the celebration of the Venetian Carnival has its origins in the 13th century when the social classes were considered unbreakable. In this party, through the use of masks, the different social classes mixed for the only time in the year.
The anonymity, that these exquisite costumes and masks, gave people a great deal of freedom to enjoy themselves away from all judgment. That is why this tradition became so popular and, to this day, continues to attract thousands of travelers who seek to find themselves behind a mask, or simply photograph the fantastic costumes that can be seen on the roads.
The Venetian Mask
Traditionally, the Venetian mask allowed people, through the anonymity they granted, to free themselves from all the mandates and impositions of their social class. During carnival a beggar could be king and a nobleman could have fun without following any protocol or etiquette. This is why Venetian masks are a symbol of liberation and fun.
Arriving in Venice, you'll see these pieces of art on every corner, from elaborate masks made by local artisans to their miniature version on magnets to stick on your fridge.
If you come to Venice just look at the showcases, surely a mask will ask to go with you.
