Why Visit Naxos?

Naxos is a Greek island, which is known to be the largest of the Cyclades, an archipelago located in the Aegean Sea. The capital of this island has the same name and around 2900 inhabitants.

The beautiful landscape of Naxos is distinguished by the presence of mountains, paradisiacal beaches and abundant vegetation.

In turn, Naxos is famous for its archaeological discoveries, its incredible architecture that accounts for the different influences that the historical periods had when carrying out their constructions and an atmosphere full of mysticism thanks to the privileged place that Greek mythology gave to the island.

Naxos: The Island That Everyone Wanted

The island of Naxos was already inhabited since two thousand BC. During the archaic period it was colonized by the Ionians and a great period of economic development began.

During the 7th and 6th centuries BC it reached its peak and dominated all the Cyclades. However, in 491 BC, during the Medic Wars, the Persians took Naxos and the city and its temples were burned.

Later the Naxios regained control of the island in the battle of Salamis, but they had to submit to the Athenians in 468 BC.

In the year 338 a. C., the island was dominated by the Macedonians and in 166 a. C. by the Romans.

Already during the Middle Ages, like the rest of the Cyclades islands, Naxos fell under the power of the Venetians, and from the mid-16th century and the beginning of the 19th century under the power of the Ottomans, until the Greek Revolution in 1821 when Naxos was incorporated. to the Greek state.

Highlights of the Precious Naxos

Welcome to the Banquet of Naxos

Naxos is a magnificent destination for lovers of good food as the fertility of its lands and the abundance of its coastal areas have given the Naxians the best raw material to prepare their exquisite dishes.

In fact, their products have great national recognition and once you try one of their delicious recipes you will understand why. In the coastal area, seafood and fish stand out, in the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas you can try lamb and in the lowland area, local products are vegetables that go from the garden to your table and dairy products.

As for drinks, be sure to try their citrus liqueurs and delicious wines. And for dessert, we recommend the "Morena", a walnut and citrus tart that is usually accompanied with ice cream.

Naxos, the Island Bathed by Rivers

Naxos has a large involvement in Greek mythology. In Homer's Odyssey, Artemis, a Greek goddess known for protecting childhoods and wildlife, is mentioned as killing Ariadne on "Dia, the island bathed by rivers" an island that some historians associate with Naxos.

Likewise, among other stories where Naxos is found, it is known that this was an island that worshiped Dionysus, a God whose privileged scope of action was wine, parties and pleasures. And there is no doubt, because the island with its paradisiacal views invites you to connect with your senses and enjoy with your whole body.

Jewels of Naxos

Naxos is, as well as known for its beautiful natural landscape, known for its historical treasures. Here we mention some of the attractions that you cannot miss on your trip to the island:

  1. Portara, a gigantic door that is what remains of the fabulous archaic temple of Apollo.
  2. Apeiranthos, a very well-preserved town, whose houses and streets are entirely built in marble, which is why it is known as the White City.
  3. The Venetian castle, where you will find large doors and towers, inside which is the archaeological museum, the Catholic cathedral, the old merchant school and several monasteries.
  4. The temple dedicated to the goddess Dimitra, dating from 530 B.C.
  5. The historic center, which is the most picturesque to sit in some of its taverns and drink the typical Greek coffee.

The Eye of Naxos

If you are thinking of traveling to Naxos and would like to bring a special gift to a loved one, we recommend the “Eye of Naxos” jewelry.

The eye of Naxos is a shell with a very special shape, specifically the superficial part of a spiral shell, which is polished and used by many jewelers to make extremely fine earrings or pendants.

This most interesting accessory is a great way to always carry the sea with you, so it will not fail when entertaining.

Beach Life in Naxos

The coast is an essential part of the Naxos idiosyncrasy, not only because of the products that the sea provides for its gastronomy, but also because of the peaceful refuge that these beaches with crystalline waters offer to the Naxios.

Surrounded by vegetation and, sometimes, close to temples or other archaeological treasures, these beaches offer the best environment to relax and enjoy the sun and the sounds of the sea.

Some of the beaches that will leave you speechless are:

  1. The beach of Grotta, which has incredible views, on one side the typical Greek houses and, on the other, the Portara of the Temple of Apollo.
  2. Agios Georgicos beach, where you will find the best sunset view.
  3. Alyko beach, which has a beautiful natural environment, as this white sand peninsula is surrounded by cedars, which makes it look like a deserted island.
  4. Psili Ammos beach, one of the most beautiful for its white sand and crystal clear waters.

What to See and Do in Naxos
