General Information About Esna
Esna is a city in Egypt located on the banks of the Nile River, in the governorate of Qena, fifty-five kilometers from Luxor. This city in the past was the ancient Iunyt, the capital of the Nome III of Upper Egypt. Then it was the capital of Hierakonpolis and later of Eileithyaspolis.
This small city is the starting point for most of the Nile cruises because the Esna lock is located there, a hydraulic work that allows you to overcome a drop of ten meters and makes it possible to cross from there to Aswan.
It has an arid climate with a warm winter, with temperature fluctuations between day and night, and a summer in which temperatures often exceed forty degrees.
The most prominent site of interest in Esna is the Temple of Khnum, an Ancient Egyptian sanctuary dedicated to Khnum, who was worshiped as the creator God in southern Egypt and Nubia.
The History of Esna
In the times of Ancient Egypt, the city of Esna was called “Jwnj.t”, however, there is very little information about these times. If there is one from the Ptolemaic era, when the city began to be called Latópolis, it is believed that because of the abundance of the Lates niloticus fish in the area.
Records of the following period, during Roman domination, are also preserved thanks to architectural ruins and archaeological finds. The most important traces of these times are the remains of the Jnum temple.
During medieval times, Esna was under Arab domination, as this city was an important point on the routes that connected the Red Sea and the Western Desert Oases. Several buildings remain from this period, including the Al-Qīsāriyya market, which is still very active today.
Esna Highlights
What to Eat If You Travel to Esna
Esna is a great destination for those who enjoy good food, since its great gastronomic offer will allow you to get to know the best of Egyptian cuisine and enjoy discovering a culture based on its flavors.
In its typical dishes you will find a combination of colors, textures, aromas and tastes that perfectly reflects the intertwined culture of Egypt, since the influences of the different peoples that inhabited this land can be appreciated in each of its delicacies.
One dish that we recommend you try is Warak Enab, a roll made with grape leaves and stuffed with rice, meat, tomato and onion, seasoned with basil and cinnamon. An aromatic delight that you cannot stop trying.
Likewise, we invite you to try Fuul Medames, a dish made from cooked and mashed beans until they form a puree, which is inserted into pita bread. Sometimes to this dish with slices of boiled egg and beans seasoned with pepper and cumin.
Finally, another salty dish that we recommend is the Kushari, a meal that has pasta, rice, chickpeas, lentils, tomato sauce with spices, garlic and vinegar, a hearty dish to recharge your batteries after a busy day exploring beautiful Esna.
As for dessert, you can't miss a delicacy to test the most demanding palates: Konafa, thin rolled dough, filled with cream, soft cheese and nuts.
To accompany your meals or quench your thirst you will find a delicious variety of teas, juices and coffee.
Some Cultural Aspects of Esna
Esna is one of the most spectacular destinations to visit, not only because of the beauty of this exotic land but also because of its historical interest, since different civilizations passed through this city and that has left great cultural remnants, both in its customs and flavors and in its culture, architecture and traditions.
However, to make your visit the best we tell you about some issues that you should take into account. To begin, you should know the main religion: Islam. For this reason you will find that many of their customs are crossed by Islamic culture.
Because of that you will find that people, and especially women, abide by certain dress codes, such as the use of a veil that covers their hair and part of their face.
If you want to see the main attractions of this city, especially those of a religious nature, you will also need to dress in this way, so we recommend that you wear clothes that cover your legs and arms and bring a scarf to cover your hair.
Also, you should know that it is customary in a large part of Egypt when visiting someone to bring them a present, so if you make friends, prepare a small gift before going to their house.
Finally, if you are going to eat at a restaurant, take food with your right hand, do not finish your plate unless you want to be served more and do not forget to praise the food.
The Temple of Khnum in Esna
The Khnum temple, in Esna, is the most important trace of the Ptolemaic and Roman periods and the jewel of the city thanks to its historical and architectural value, which attracts the most curious researchers and tourists from all over the world.
This sanctuary was dedicated to the worship of Jnum, the creator God, and it is believed that it was built on top of another pre-existing temple. His remains remained buried under the sand until the 19th century, when they began to be unearthed.
The best preserved part of the temple is the Hypostyle Room, a work begun under the rule of the Emperor Tiberius, continued by Claudius and Vespasian. This presents decorations from the times of Domitian, Trajan and Hadrian.
There, you can admire twenty-four thirteen-meter-high columns with beautiful lotus-shaped capitals, which support an architrave ceiling. In the bas-reliefs on this ceiling and on the walls you can see different scenes of the gods and the pharaoh's hunt.
Also, hieroglyphics with hymns to Khnum, a festival calendar, astronomical scenes and zodiac signs can be seen. Even the deity Khnum represented with the head of a ram is observed.
This temple was connected to the Nile through a ceremonial path. This was so because the deity Khnum was closely associated with the river, especially with the mud around it, especially with the one that formed after the floods,
This is explained from the fact that Jnum was in charge of creation and it was believed that he modeled human beings with this mud.
