    Excursion Itinerary: Middle atlas from fez

    We will start the trip in the morning and head to explore some of the most beautiful tourist destinations located in the Fez region. We will first stop at Sefrou (28 km south of Fez), a very old walled city at the foothills of the Middle Atlas mountain range. However, it is essentially known for cherry production, hence a UNESCO-endorsed cherry festival is held annually every June. In fact, Sefrou is a place where you may want to do some walking, as it is high enough to avoid the dry heat of summer.

    The journey continues towards Azrou and its surroundings, but before arriving there, you will stop at Ifrane, an impressive city with pseudo-alpine villages and the climate due to frequent snowfalls. The city's prominent "stone lion", apparently carved by an Italian prisoner of war, stands in one of the parks. However, the statue commemorates the last wild Atlas lion that was shot in the 1920s. You will drive another 20 km to Azrou, the first real city in the middle Atlas. Azrou ("Stone" in Berber) is named after a massive outcrop adjacent to the city. Crucially, Azrou is notable for the nearby Atlas Cedar Forest, home to the endangered Barbary apes.

    At the end of the afternoon, we will return to Fez.
