Discovering the beautiful Monemvasia in Peloponnese
Monemvasia is located on an island off the east coast of Laconia, south of the Peloponnese. It is connected only by an artificial bridge that connects this southern tip of the Peloponnese with the old island.
At first glance, it looks like a geological formation or an immense rock covered with vegetation, but when you cross the bridge you will discover that behind the only gateway to the hill hides one of the most beautiful villages in Greece.
The Monemvasia citadel is divided into two areas. In the lower part of the city, you will be able to admire the paved alleys and you will discover many houses, hotels and small shops. If you stay on the main street, you will reach the central square, with its church and cathedral.
Once there, you can follow one of the zigzag paths to reach the upper town and the castle. Enjoying the path and the splendid view of the rooftops and the Mediterranean Sea is a unique experience that we guarantee is worth this little effort.
This beautiful place is known to many as the Gibraltar of Greece, and Monemvasia is the perfect example of the mixture of Byzantine, Turkish and Venetian history dating back to the 13th century. This natural fortress served as a refuge during the barbarian invasions of the 6th century, and later during the numerous wars against the Franks or the Turks.
Only the owners of hotels or boutiques, restaurants and souvenir shops live permanently in Monemvasia, and it is undoubtedly a perfect place to walk and discover its charm since it is considered one of the most beautiful and romantic places in Greece.
